Dear friend

We live in a part of Sydney where there is a lot going on. Very few of us will have avoided the shemozzle of the Western Harbour Tunnel/Warringah Freeway interchange. Many of us will be keen to see how the end result works. I was devastated by the destruction of so many mature trees and bird habitat, so I am very sceptical.

This week you may have received a copy of the ‘Berrys Bay Community Update’ August 2024 from Transport for NSW (TFN) in your mailbox. I did not as I do not live in Waverton, so I found it online at Western Sydney tunnel update

According to the document this has been shaped by North Sydney Council and community consultation. There are plans for more community consultation according to the leaflet in late 2024. More details can be found on their website.

For those interested in the Cycleway to the Sydney Harbour Bridge this also has a community update.

This week The Sydney Morning Herald published an article the golden smokestack that TFN is planning to build at Cammeray. Quite an edifice at 30 metres high it will no doubt be a talking point for a long time.

As the TFN has the power to approve its own projects there is often community frustration with these projects, however it is worth taking the time to be informed and to contribute when you get the opportunity.

Please add these dates into your diary:

With the release of the document on Berry’s Bay is it timely that the Speakers on Tuesday 13 will talk about bushcare and our local wildlife. A Bushcare officer and a member of North Sydney Council will tell us more. We have a walk planned for later in the year to explore our local bush. Be at the Waverton Uniting Church Hall on Tuesday at 2pm.

Plus Phil is promising the Cherry blossom walk on August 19 at 9.30! No promise of cherry blossom as it can be very elusive - even in Japan I am told.

The following week mark Tuesday 20 August for the AGM at 2pm. It’s at the Coal Loader (not the Hall!). I hope to see you there. We will be providing afternoon tea so we need you to RSVP; or send your apologies.

The Men's Dinner is on the agenda too – for Wednesday 20 August. A great chance for the men together! You can book here.

So much going on! hope to catch up soon!

P.S. My partner is fascinated by Bracket Fungus! He found this one on Berry Island.

  1. The key is placed on top pf the piano while the Class is in progress
  2. Ensure that the door is locked at the end of the Class
  3. Use the Key to lock the door and place it back in the Lock box

If these procedures are not followed the next Class may not be able to gain entry to the Hall. Thank you.

"Light and Dark - Conservation through a Polar Lens" - 13 August - Marnie Ogg

Marnie, with her extensive background in the travel industry, has ventured through an awe-inspiring 82 countries, each with its own tale and terrain. But what truly sets her journey apart is her profound appreciation for the natural world, especially the enigmatic, expanses that lie hidden in the polar realms.

The polar regions, with their icy majesty and unparalleled beauty, hold secrets that beckon the adventurous spirit in us. Yet, beyond their breathtaking landscapes, they whisper tales of conservation, resilience, and the delicate balance of nature. Marnie's deep love for the dark world, where stars shimmer undisturbed and nature's rhythms play out in their purest form, has led her to champion the cause of night conservation.

Join us on this mesmerising expedition as Marnie intertwines her travel tales, her dark sky protection work, and the crucial lessons the Arctic and Antarctic teach us about conservation of these threatened environments.

The meeting will be held at Piato Restaurant 123 Blues Point Road, McMahons Point at 7:00 am. Breakfast is served during the talk.
