Dear friend

This week a group from the Hub tried croquet. There was not a flamingo or a live hedgehog to be seen at the Chatswood Croquet Club. For two hours a team of dedicated croquet players from the Club guided 14 Hubbers through the intricacies of the game. Though it was a bit chilly, the time flew by as we discovered all about strategy and skill. The general verdict was that it was 'great fun' and all said they would love to do it again. The CCC has offered us the possibility of repeating the excursion so keep watching the newsletter for updates.

Meanwhile if you are not sure about where the flamingo and the hedgehogs come in you can watch a scene from one of the many films of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ . I think this is probably the best version, though a little fuzzy. It was made in 1999 (not by Disney!) and stars Miranda Richardson as the Queen, Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire Cat and Ben Kingsley as the Caterpillar.

Last week on Tuesday a big group of 40+ enjoyed Cheryl Crawford’s talk ‘Antics at the Airport’. As an Airport Ambassador Cheryl met travellers of all kinds and she amused her audience with tales of missing luggage, passengers in the wrong airport, a baby who sailed around on a luggage carousel and much more. Once a month on a Tuesday afternoon the Hub hosts speakers in the Uniting Church Hall and we aim to bring you something different and informative every month. Watch the newsletters for details of the next Speaker on August 13. If you have suggestions for a Speaker please email us.

I hope you have Tuesday 20 August in your diary for the Hub’s AGM. We are meeting at the Coal Loader at 2pm and afternoon tea will be served.

We need more Hubbers to be involved in organising and helping with Hub events. I find volunteering hugely rewarding. As well as the Hub I enjoy teaching Primary Ethics once a week, and I am involved with my dance group. Most of all its fun – and I have meet many interesting people and made new friends, and I feel that it helps me to stay physically and mentally alert. How much time you spend depends on how much you would like to be involved.

Can you assist the Waverton Hub by helping with:

  • Assistance at events, e.g. Speakers days, Afternoon teas
  • Joining our Communications team and working on the Newsletter and PR
  • IT/Web support
  • Backing up Walks leaders/leading walks
  • Other

If you would like to be involved please send an email.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PAM

The Hub has 3 nonagenarians and Pam is one of them.

Pam joined the Hub at the beginning and immediately participated in the Games Day, learning Mahjong which is now her passion. This week some players joined her for lunch at the Third Rail followed of course by several games of Mahjong.

Later she wrote "I would like to thank you and the Hub Games Day players for the lovely lunch for my birthday It almost makes you feel glad you are the oldest person there and as you told me one of the oldest persons in the Hub I am so lucky I became a member of the Hub with great friends who do so much for me and who made my life happy during the pandemic playing Mahjong twice a week and doing my shopping for me and very clever at finding everything on half price for me    Thank you again for my lovely luncheon"

The Hub has certainly achieved its objectives for Pam.
