Dear friend

The weather has hardly been conducive to getting out and about. If it’s not very wet, it’s very humid and sticky. Even if you have lived in Sydney all your life this weather can be trying, so I hope everyone is taking care of themselves and finding plenty to do in the cool indoors.

It is the time of the Sydney Festival and there are some truly innovative, creative works to enjoy. A few of us went to ‘Send for Nellie’, a cabaret at the Sydney Theatre Company that told the story of Nellie Small, a West Indian Australian performer, working in variety in 1930s Sydney. It was interesting to learn that Nellie had lived in North Sydney from 1930s with Ted Meggitt, a furrier and his wife Edith. North Sydney would have been a very different place in the 1930s - I wonder what Nellie would think of North Sydney today? I hope you have found performances or activities that you have enjoyed during Sydney’s Festival month.

The Hub activity classes are filling up fast. If you have yet to book don’t put it off.

We had over 20 people expressing interest in the Art Class and the Drawing Class, which will only take 10 people each. They still have places. If you registered interest be sure to book if you want to attend. These classes are very good value and slightly cheaper than classes run by the North Sydney Community Centre. You will find the links below.

You may miss a class so do scroll down to the bottom of the newsletter.

I hope you will put Thursday February 1 in your diary for the Hub’s inaugural Ball’s Head Picnic! I love a picnic - I hope you do too. See below for details.

I look forward to catching up,

Carol Fallows

President

P.S. update on the Street Library outside Waverton Cellars. John Medcalf purchased 2 bookcases from Vinnies on behalf of Raymond at the Cellars. The Wollstonecraft Mens’ Shed are now turning them into the classiest of Street Libraries!

Nikola Tesla: Brilliant Inventor but Tragic Eccentric

– 23 January 2024 – Don Napper

The Tesla electric car has recently brought Tesla’s name to public notice. However, it is his many inventions, especially exploiting AC electricity, that have contributed greatly to the world’s technological well-being for over a century and are present unacknowledged in our lives every day. His personal life was that of a tragic eccentric.

Don Napper will talk about Tesla’s life and inventions.

Emeritus Professor Don Napper was educated at Sydney and Cambridge Universities in molecular chemistry. He retired from Sydney University in 2003 as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences & Technology), where he is now Professor Emeritus.

The meeting will be held at Piato Restaurant, 123 Blues Point Road, McMahons Point at 7:00 am for 7:15 a.m. start. We finish promptly at 8:30 a.m.  At about 7:30 a.m., Don will talk for about 30 minutes, followed by questions and breakfast is served during the talk.
