The history of the creation of The Waverton Hub
The Waverton Hub is mutual organisation of residents of Waverton, Wollstonecraft and neighbouring areas in Sydney. As we grow older, we members of the Hub are helping each other to enjoy our lives, stay in our own homes for as long as we can, to be as healthy as we can, and achieve all this for as little cost as possible. We are ageing meaningfully in our own community.
About a dozen of us started the organisation from scratch in late 2012 .We opened for membership in August 2013 with a program of activities and by April 2015 had over 300 paid up members (74% women, 26% men. Around 70 members work on the Hub activities, programs and management and communication.
The Hub is doing things locally while helping residents to get good access to existing services.
In January 2014 The Hub was awarded the 2014 Community Group of the Year Award by North Sydney Council. The award is “in recognition of the dedication and voluntary participation of the members of the Waverton Hub and the contribution to the local community”. The Hub was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award by the Australia Day Council. In August at the Joe Hockey North Sydney Community Organisation awards, the Waverton Hub was given a North Sydney Community Group Award in recognition of outstanding service. Hub President, Helen L’Orange AM, and chair of Hub Management Committee Nelly Wong were awarded individual North Sydney Community Awards in recognition of outstanding service to the community. Helen was inducted into Hall of Fame North Sydney Community Awards.
